–One of the most essential things in the survival, sustenance and development of the human life is food. Food – either solid or liquid – is the major source of energy for humans, and asides fueling the body system, food plays a dramatic role in its ability to fight off diseases including cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and weak bones.
After consistent records from recent research, findings point to the fact that a diet high in plant-based foods – vegetables, fruits, grains, peas, beans and potatoes – is the body’s best defense against many health-related challenges. The activity of these foods are dynamic, as they shield the body from various diseases.
Scientists have recently asserted that approximately 30 to 40 percent of all cancers could be averted if people consumed more fruits, vegetables, and plant-based foods while lowering their intake of high-fat, high calorie edibles that have intangible nutritional values. Researchers used to link fat consumption with the development of cancers, but in recent times, they believe that eating fruits, vegetables and grains may be more important in preventing diseases than even getting fat.
The essential components consumed from healthy foods are antioxidants and phytochemicals. Antioxidants are found in fruits, vegetables and other plant-based foods (in the form of Vitamin C, E and beta carotene) and they fight compounds in the body that attack and destroy cell membranes, causing many cancers. Phytochemicals protect against malignant cells by stunting its growth and they are found in food like cabbage, cauliflower, peas, beans and even soy milk. While supplements can also help in getting some of the benefits of these substances, they are not replacement for real food.
It’s undeniable that a well-balanced diet goes hand in hand with a healthy lifestyle. What you choose to eat, and what you choose not to eat, are mutual determinants of your susceptibility to certain illnesses and diseases. Food choices make a huge impact on how you feel today, tomorrow and what the future holds in terms of promoting and maintaining good health.
