Today’s youth are ready to break and make changes globally. They are filled with unlimited energy and potential to become successful in all fields of life. They seek out challenges, innovation and creativity.

The aim of World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) is to advocate for skills as an important factor to improve young people’s transitions to decent work, and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing today’s most challenging global issues.

A skill is the ability to do something well, which translates to expertise. To claim mastery over a skill or set of skills, depth of knowledge has to be present. Skills are peculiar factors when it comes to setting individuals apart from each other, especially when it involves occupations which require a unique set of skills. Mostly, only individuals qualified with certain skills can perform the job responsibilities effectively.

Studying a particular course in the university differs from going for training on the studied course, as training provides a more detailed insight on how to pilot particular functions whenever the individual is called. A combination of acquired skills and education creates an offering of effective functions from an individual to any company they find themselves. Typical examples of core skills one can learn and master are;

  • Presentation skills
  • Negotiation skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Managerial skills
  • Communication skills
  • Software skills (i.e. programming, coding, UI/UX, data analysis etc.)
  • Blue-collar skills (i.e. plumbing, electrician, carpentry, painting, welding, auto mechanics) etc.

The usefulness of skills cannot be over emphasized among youths, especially in Nigeria as it is a tool for achieving success in life. Diverse skills provide diverse life options and skills are not always imparted on students through the curriculums that be in Africa, resulting in a gulf of unemployment. A few factors pinpoint the importance of skills, these are; self-employment, diverse job opportunities, employment generation, crime curbing, and self-actualization.

A skilled programmer has no business with cyber-threat or online theft, as they would instead choose to spend more time on legal (and gainful) employment. Several other examples abound as related to how skill acquisition can curb crime.

Nonetheless, the modern reality of the Nigerian dream is that the youths have to take charge of the helms of affairs of the state in one meaningful way or another – through skill acquisition as a potent element – as if not now, when?

Therefore, on the occasion of the World Youth Skills Day, the UN is emphasizing the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in providing youth with the opportunities to develop their competencies and accelerate their transition to work.
