Child development involves the psychological, biological and emotional changes that occur between birth and the end of adolescence. The early years of a child’s life are very crucial for his/her development.

Children usually go through distinct periods of development as they move from infants to young adults, and during each stage, they undergo multiple physiological changes. Although these changes are predominantly determined by genetics, environmental circumstances and exchanges with key individuals within the environment also have a significant influence on how each child benefits from every developmental event.

Irrespective of their abilities and healthcare needs, children need to grow in an environment where not just their educational needs are met, but also their social and emotional needs which include spending time with family, reading, playing etc. Proper nutrition, exercise & sleep also make a big difference in a child’s development.

A recently released report points out key ways via which parents can support their child/children’s healthy development, and they include;

  • Showing sensitivity and warmth
  • Responding to children in a predictable way
  • Supporting health and safety
  • Appropriating discipline
  • Having household rules and routines
  • Sharing books and talking to children

Developmental milestones such as taking first steps, first words etc. give a general idea of the changes to expect as a child gets older. Therefore, it is imperative that parents, grandparents and caregivers participate in the developmental monitoring of the child so as to observe how the child grows and changes overtime.

Each child is distinct and it is of vital importance that parents learn to understand, respect, support and encourage the unique characteristics and abilities of each child. Mentally healthy children have a positive quality of life &function well at home, in school & their communities.
